Asheville Dentist on TMD Treatment and Jaw Pain

Posted In: Practice News on Wednesday, February 20th, 2013 at 12:01 am

Asheville, NC – Dr. Mark Kleive, a practitioner of dentistry in Asheville, seeks to educate patients and prospective patients on Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Many patients suffering from the condition are aware of their symptoms, though unaware of the cause. Dr. Kleive, who diagnoses TMD on a weekly basis at his Black Mountain practice, says that most TMD patients originally come into the office with complaints of physical discomfort and have no idea why they are experiencing pain.

The process for TMD treatment begins with a thorough exam as patients seek dental care for unexplained pain. Dr. Kleive starts with a pre-clinical interview in order to discover what brings the patients into the office in the first place. However, not all patients who have significant dental issues will experience discomfort. These types of dental problems, unnoticed and unidentifiable by the patient, are why Dr. Kleive performs an oral exam on every patient after each pre-clinical interview. He uses the oral exam as a screening process to uncover indications of unforeseen problems – such as TMD – so that if the exam reveals any warning signs, a more thorough exam can be conducted.

Dr. Kleive says once a patient is diagnosed with TMD, there are several treatment methods available. The first is self-care. Dr. Kleive provides patients with guidance on how factors such as diet can contribute to TMD pain, and suggests measures such as minimizing the intake of hard foods. A second option is an orthotic for the mouth in the form of a bite splint. Restorative procedures for the teeth are a third option for patients who suffer from severe TMD. Dr. Kleive may refer some patients to an orthodontist to reposition the teeth when absolutely necessary; however, the treatment depends on the diagnosis and the varying states of the condition.

The Asheville dentist believes his role is to discover what patients want and to help them achieve their goals. He notes that TMD causes patients headaches and limits the range of motion of the jaw. However, he also stresses that TMD not only affects the mouth, but the whole body. Treating TMD can not only relieve headaches and restore jaw motion, but also ease discomfort in the neck and the body’s overall posture.

For patients wondering if TMD treatments are covered by insurance, Dr. Kleive recommends patients check with their individual insurance carrier. He does say that if a patient has insurance, most TMD benefits are processed through medical insurance rather than dental insurance. If a patient has medical insurance without dental insurance, Dr. Kleive suggests patients still contact their provider, as oftentimes coverage for TMD treatments does not require a separate dental care plan.

Asheville Dentist Practices Minimally Invasive Dentistry

Asheville, NC – Dr. Mark Kleive, an Asheville dentist, is an advocate and practitioner of minimally-invasive dentistry. He holds patient education as a top priority at his practice, and desires to work with patients to achieve their individual cosmetic dental goals. While planning the steps to reach these goals, Dr. Kleive upholds the philosophy that significant results can be achieved with a minimally-invasive approach to dental work.

According to Dr. Kleive, the main concept behind minimally-invasive dentistry is to conserve as much of the patient’s natural tooth structure as possible, with the intent that these natural structures can be preserved for as long as possible. Dr. Kleive points out white filling materials are one major recent technological advancement that has allowed for such preservation. In addition to serving as a more aesthetically-pleasing alternative to traditional metallic fillings, white filling materials can be used to complement a minimally-invasive smile makeover in combination with porcelain veneers and teeth whitening.

Porcelain veneers have the greatest potential for a cosmetic impact, as they are used to repair minor damage such as chipped, scratched, crooked, or discolored teeth. By applying a porcelain veneer, Dr. Kleive is able to preserve the main structure of the tooth while addressing the cosmetic issue. Instead of having to replace or reshape the entire tooth, porcelain veneers or white filling materials allow a dentist to keep the remaining portion of the patient’s tooth and recreate the missing or damaged part of the tooth. At his Black Mountain practice, Dr. Kleive uses veneers crafted by Mr. Dave Chermak, a certified dental technologist specializing in veneers. These veneers are made from the highest quality of porcelain so that Dr. Kleive’s patients receive the most durable dental treatments available.

Dr. Kleive, a practitioner of dentistry in Asheville, suggests that the concepts of minimally invasive dentistry and preventative dentistry are not only related to one another, but inseparable. He seeks to maintain as much of a patient’s natural tooth structure as possible, performing procedures that are designed to prevent further damage or decay. When working with a tooth that has a compromised structure, Dr. Kleive seeks to perform the least invasive procedure possible that will simultaneously deliver the maximum benefit for the patient. Keeping the notion of preventive dentistry in mind, he operates with the idea that the more natural tooth structures a patient keeps, the less synthetic material a dentist needs to construct or add. Dr. Kleive also believes minimally invasive dentistry should be the industry’s standard model. Any procedure a dentist can perform that maintains the patient’s natural, healthy teeth in place will lead to a more natural looking, cosmetically appealing smile.

Asheville Dentist Adds New Cone Beam Technology

Black Mountain, NC – Dr. Mark Kleive, an Asheville cosmetic dentist, has recently introduced a new digital imaging device to his practice and is seeing dramatic results. The innovative ORTHOPHOS XG system with 3D Cone Beam technology is a scientific breakthrough by Sirona that offers the advantages of 2D and 3D imaging in one machine. With such a significant improvement in the visual mapping of the mouth, Dr. Kleive says he is able to perform surgeries, such as dental implants, with increased precision.

The XG 3D provides a wide range of panoramic and cephalometric X-ray capabilities that initially creates a comprehensive picture of the mouth to assist in diagnosis. Dr. Kleive says that in the past, a patient complaining of a sore tooth might have two-dimensional X-rays in which no problem is visible. With the new scanning technology of the XG 3D, he adds that same tooth problem is obvious. Combined with integrated software, the XG 3D is able to produce a single, complete image of the mouth as opposed to two-dimensional renderings of the teeth or numerous traditional X-ray slides. The Asheville dentist says this three-dimensionality has a distinct advantage for performing operations. The image allows him to know the exact location of the bone from every angle, allowing him to better predict the success of an implant procedure as well as provide an accurate guide for the surgery itself.

Dr. Kleive also points out the advantages patients will experience with the machine. The 360-degree rotating picture of the mouth gives patients a better understanding of their individual circumstance and their current condition. This increase in patient awareness leads to well-informed decisions for both the patients and the doctor. In addition, the XG 3D outputs the highest image clarity available while also emitting the lowest radiation levels. As Dr. Kleive strives to remain on the cutting-edge of the dental industry and provide his Asheville cosmetic dentistry patients with the safest and most effective procedures, he says he welcomes this technological advancement to his practice.

Dental Restorations Device Now Available at North Carolina Cosmetic Dentistry Practice

Asheville, NC — Dr. Mark Kleive, a cosmetic dentist in Asheville, has announced he will now be offering CEREC® technology, an innovative dental device for the manufacturing of crowns, implants, and other restorations. Dr. Kleive says he is excited about the new machine’s capability to fabricate precise restorative dentistry fittings in a matter of minutes, expediting patient visits and improving their overall dental experience.

At his Asheville cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Kleive focuses on a range of cosmetic and restorative procedures including Invisalign®, porcelain veneers, and dental crowns. Dr. Kleive recently announced the addition of CEREC® technology to his repertoire of dental restoration services in the hopes of improving patient comfort and care. Developed by global dental equipment company Sirona, the CEREC® device manufactures crowns, fillings, and other restorative dentistry procedures from porcelain or ceramic materials. Dr. Kleive says he hopes offering the procedure will allow him to utilize some of the most advanced technology on the market to perform detailed, effective restorations for procedures like crowns and dental implants in Asheville.

As an in-office, chair-side procedure, Dr. Kleive says patients can enjoy the immediate benefits of the CEREC® device through aesthetic, functional restorations created in a quick and precise manner while they wait. Through the use of advanced computer mapping software, he says he will be able to correct chipped and missing teeth with full-contour crowns and bridges in an expedited process. Dr. Kleive also says the improved efficiency of the CEREC® technology means fewer injections, less visits to the dentist, and less drilling for dental restorations. “The most impressive benefit is the increase in patient comfort that this technology provides. Overall there is less appointment time, fewer procedures during each appointment, and a healthier process for individual teeth. Patients also appreciate not having traditional impressions taken.”

Regardless of whether patients are looking for a restorative procedure like dental crowns or a cosmetic enhancement such as porcelain veneers in Asheville, Dr. Kleive says staying up-to-date with the latest technology is essential for providing patients with the quality care they expect. He says he is excited about the new device and hopes it will reiterate his commitment to the highest standard of excellence and quality results for his patients, as well as the latest technological advancements. “Dentistry is changing and changing for the better. Patients can now have their mouths restored with better materials in a shorter amount of time. It’s possible for people to experience a more positive side of dentistry and this type of technology allows that to happen.”

Asheville Cosmetic Dentist Says TMJ Disorder Is Common But Often Left Untreated

TMJ is Common But Often Untreated According to Cosmetic Dentist in Asheville

According to the latest statistics from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder (TMD/TMJ) is one of the most commonly occurring musculoskeletal conditions. However, only half to two-thirds of the suffering population seek treatment for the condition. Dr. Mark Kleive, a cosmetic dentist in Asheville, NC, says there are several reliable treatment options available to patients for resolving TMJ and reducing or eliminating the associated jaw pain.

A recent report from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) states temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder, or TMD, has been shown to affect up to 12% of the American population. This makes TMD the second most frequently occurring musculoskeletal condition resulting in pain and disability next to chronic lower back pain. At his Asheville cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Mark Kleive says the effects of TMJ are often serious; however, there are reliable treatment options in modern dental care for correcting the cause of the symptoms. According to the NIDCR study, only half to two-thirds of those who suffer from the condition actually seek TMJ treatment, Dr. Kleive says early diagnosis and dental therapy can help ease and eliminate the muscle pain, headaches and tension associated with the disorder and restore healthy, pain-free jaw movement.

For treating TMJ in Asheville, Dr. Kleive says identification of the underlying source of pain and discomfort are essential to crafting an individualized treatment plan. Although there are a wide variety of causes for TMJ, he says some of the more prevalent reasons include poor bite alignment; chronic clenching or grinding of teeth, especially during sleep; trauma or accident; anxiety or stress, and chronic illness. Dr. Kleive assures patients that through diagnosis of oral history and habits, x-rays of the teeth and jaw, and a thorough examination from an experienced dentist, patients can identify TMJ and treat it using personalized solutions such as Invisalign® for bite realignment and a custom-fitted oral bite guard.

“There are many treatment options, but oral appliances such as bite guards can be a straightforward solution to relief from jaw pain,” says Dr. Kleive. “For some patients, they are an ideal solution because they are custom crafted for each individual and generally can provide rapid relief from symptoms.”

Dr. Kleive says patients seeking relief from the pain associated with TMJ should consult a qualified dental practice before undergoing treatment to ensure proper therapy and the most effective results. He also adds that given the right treatment for each individual, patients can resume normal daily functions and get back to living their lives without pain.

“Because TMD symptoms like headaches, tension, and muscle tenderness aren’t always attributed to the temporomandibular joint, some people experience years of discomfort before receiving a proper diagnosis, says Dr. Kleive” “When patients finally experience relief from their symptoms, they couldn’t imagine living life any other way.”

Cosmetic Dentist in Asheville on the Increase in Smile Makeovers

A recent survey from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) finds 99.7% of Americans believe a smile is an important social asset, with 74% believing an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chance for success. Asheville cosmetic dentist Mark Kleive, DDS says this belief is part of American culture, and urges patients to research dentists before undergoing any procedure, such as a smile makeover, which combines dental procedures like teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, or dental implants.

99.7% of Americans believe a smile is an important social asset according to a recent survey from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Additionally, 74% of survey participants believe a person’s smile greatly impacts their chance for success. Dr. Mark Kleive says these statistics show cause for the extreme increase in cosmetic procedures at his Asheville, NC cosmetic dentistry practice and across the U. S. over the past 5 years: since 2006, teeth whitening procedures have increased by 300%, and porcelain veneers by 250%.

As more patients undergo cosmetic dental procedures like teeth whitening, or multi-phase dental procedures, such as Invisalign® and full mouth restoration, Dr. Kleive believes research is the best tool patients can use to ensure quality service and satisfying outcomes. “Patients who research procedures and providers in advance are more likely to be participants in the dental treatment experience. When patients are engaged and invested in making decisions with their treatment, everyone benefits.”

As he urges patients to stay informed, Dr. Kleive says continuing education also plays an integral role in the continued success of any dental practice. As the AACD study highlights, more patients are undergoing cosmetic dental procedures because they believe their smile is important, both in their social and professional lives. Dr. Kleive says continuing education better equips him and his team with the latest technological advancements in the dental industry.

“As a lifetime learner, drawing upon the experiences of other dentists is one way to enhance the services I provide my patients. By attending and teaching courses at post-graduate institutions, such as the Pankey Institute, I get practical and applicable knowledge, which can be immediately implemented.”
